LAVA LAMP

For my project 1, The chair chose to design is one heavily inspired by a designer I follow on Instagram by name of muddycap. He is a Korean designer who exclusively designs chairs.

                                                     - Sketches -

I had a couple of ideas going into this project ranging from a storm cloud chair and even a cobra chair. However, the one I chose in the end seemed to be the most intriguing. I also just liked it the best out of the three and I had a more concrete reference for it as well as an idea in my head.

The lava lamp concept looked clearest in the form that it ended up in. The melted feel of the sides give it a materiality that highlights this.
                                                      - Version 1 -

The first version of the chair was relatively simple was a means for me to get the idea on CAD and then in person to see if my idea actually had legs. A simple seat and back were the best idea to really give the Pop-inspired feel of the chair ground. Dimensionally, the seat itself sits at 485 mm as to accommodate my height which is higher than that of the models'. In addition, many of the people I know are taller than me. The slightly larger size is also more comfortable for me and gives the large features of the chair more presence in the actual design
                                                      - Version 2 -

For the second version of my chair, I added a shelf to the bottom of the chair. In reality I wanted to depict a more dense looking chair. However, that is kind of hard to depict with a flatpack design. I also added a back to the chair to help with this aspect. The design of the sides remained mostly unchanged beyond cleaning up a few errors. I was happy with the design based on my sketches and the majority of the variations came from entire body parts of the chair.
                                                     - Final Version -

The chair still felt like it was missing something. I kept the shelf and the back but I altered the back to look like a flowing lava lamp. I did the same with the backrest and the resulting design had a lot more character.
                                                        - Process -

The design process in Fusion360 was mostly seamless. The interface is intuitive and neat and easy to use. Cutting the models was also straightforward and fast.
